The Hiedeman family started the Turkey Day 5K race as a family event in 1999. Knowing that Thanksgiving is synonymous with overflowing plates and second helpings, Steve Hiedeman challenged his wife, daughters, sons-in-law and grandkids to go for a run before the traditional feast. The message was, "If you wanna eat, you gotta run!"
The Hiedemans have somewhat of a competitve nature, so even amongst themselves they had prizes and kept track of each year's winners, finish times and places. One year they even had "Pick Up the Pace" award for the last family finisher. That prize was a jar of Pace salsa!
Over the years more family members joined in the race, and eventually people outside the family asked if they could take part. So in 2005 the race was opened to the public, complete with age groups and door prizes. Now it's a "real race," and it continues to attract large numbers each year -- with 192 registrants in 2008.
Join us this year, and earn your pumpkin pie! Runners, walkers and strollers are welcome. (No pets, rollerblades, skateboards or bikes.)
